YMCA START is a research-based after school program serving 125 low-income students from Henry Wilson and Beech Street Schools. The curriculum includes 2.5 hours daily of academic tutoring, physical fitness, life skills, nutrition, arts, 21st century skills, character development and teamwork. Eighty-two percent of our participants speak a language other than English at home, so START helps families who need support understanding American culture and schools. Last year, 75% of START students were recognized as citizens of the month by their schools and all students in the program advanced a minimum of two reading levels.
There’s plenty for kids and parents to love about the Y’s Before & After School Programs. Kids get to experiment with their new knowledge, move their bodies, and be surrounded by positive adult role models. Kids have the opportunity to explore nature, try new activities, gain independence, and make lasting friendships and memories. And, of course, it’s fun too! In our care, your child will receive homework support, outdoor play, nutrition & fitness curriculum, healthy snacks, enrichment (STEM, creative arts, and more), character development, choice time, and more! Sibling discounts are available.
Membership types are based on all members living within the same household. Membership types can be changed based on the members’ needs. We offer two tiers of membership participation: facility membership for full service facility usage and community membership for access to programs. As a Facility Member, you have access to all of our branches. You can utilize in-house fitness programs such as group fitness classes, fitness coaching, indoor cycling, yoga and other walk-in classes at all facilities or simply come play basketball during open gym, swim laps, and enjoy the pool during open swim at select branches. Facility Members also benefit from significant program discounts (up to 50% off), 25% off the YMCA’s camping programs, and have registration priority on Y classes and programs.

Media Power Youth provides a wide variety of youth programs during afterschool, summer, and vacation weeks through local youth serving organizations. We work collaboratively with these organizations to create custom programming that fits the needs of their youth. These programs are designed to help students build 21st century skills including critical-thinking, self-regulation, social awareness, and empathic communication by engaging students in the media that shape our world. Topics include digital citizenship, media and mental health, news literacy, managing screentime, leadership & advocacy, music analysis, and film. Media is constantly evolving and we regularly update our programs to address this dynamic landscape. Many of our programs feature media creation elements that help students learn new technology skills and find their own voice advocating for themselves and the people they care about.
Programming is available at various locations, please contact us for more information.
Media Power Youth offers media literacy and health curricula, including Media Literacy for Safe & Health Choices and Screenshots (digital wellness). We also partner with schools to address real-time media challenges, such as cyberbullying and the influence of media on substance use. We provide teacher’s guides, infographics, instructional materials, and other communication tools to support school initiatives. We host parent and family educational events and facilitate learning activities as a classroom guest. Our goal is to support educators and counselors in building students’ critical thinking and social emotional skills while inspiring creative media making and exploration across a range of academic subjects.
